Comment

The following mintage data has been received from the Royal Mint FOI team, for which we are grateful:
"In 2017, there was insufficient demand for the Jane Austen £2 coins to enter general circulation. A limited number of BU went into circulation via promotional activities to support the anniversary at Winchester Cathedral alongside the £10 Jane Austen Polymer Banknote. There were 1,860 Jane Austen £2 coins released for this purpose."

Released as part of the 2017 annual BU and Proof sets for 2017 and available in individual BU packs (54,729 sales), the design was also struck in silver proof, silver piedfort and gold proof. Proof issue limit: 30,000.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a special design on the reverse side, which depicts an image of Jane Austen, a famous British author, surrounded by symbols and motifs from her works. This design was created by the artist, David Knapton, and it was the first time that Austen had been featured on a British coin. The coin was issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Austen's death and was a part of the Royal Mint's "Celebrating Austen" collection.
