Comment
Since its inception in 1997, the £2 Silver Britannia was struck in one Troy ounce of silver with a fineness of .958 and a diameter of 40mm. This changed in 2013, when the fineness was changed to .999 and the diameter reduced to 38.61 mm.This issue carries an updated reverse legend '1 oz 999 FINE SILVER' however like the previous issue it also has plain fields.
Introduced in 2013, privy marks have been added to a plain edge of the coins to commemorate the Chinese Lunar Year:
Sp#BF12A (2014) Horse privy mark:
In 2014, a mule error was produced when around 17,000 1oz Britannia bullion planchets were struck using the obverse die intended for the 2014 Lunar Year of the Horse issue paired with the standard Britannia reverse die. This resulted in the obverse portrait appearing with a plain rim instead of the normal dentils of a Britannia (see separate link below).
In 2015, a new bullion issue was introduced with a textured effect to both the obverse and reverse to help differentiate with what would become the Brilliant Uncirculated release which has a plain field on both the obverse and reverse as per the 2013 & 2014 Issues.
2014 BU issue limit: 10,000
2015 BU issue limit: 10,000
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique reverse design, showcasing a detailed image of the famous Double Helix DNA structure, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the discovery of the structure by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953.
