Comment

House of Stuart Restored (1660-1714), Charles II (1660-85), Hammered coinage (1660-62).

Listed in Spink as 'Hammered Coinage, Second issue', these pieces were actually machine made, possibly as an early trial prior to the transition to milled coinage across the whole currency in 1662. There are three similar 2 pence types:

Sp#3316 initial mark (mintmark) on obverse only;
Sp#3317 initial mark (mintmark) on both sides;
Sp#3318 initial mark (mintmark) on reverse only.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the 2 Pence Charles II early milled issue coin is that it was minted during a time of great change in England. Charles II was restored to the throne in 1660, following a period of republican rule, and the coinage was reformed to introduce milled edges and a new standardized design. This coin, with its silver content and early milled issue, represents a significant shift in the production of currency in England during this time.
