Interesting fact
The 2 Maravedis coin from Philip IV's reign (1662-1664) was the first coin to feature the iconic "pillar and wave" design, which would become a hallmark of Spanish coinage for centuries to come. This design featured a column (representing the Pillars of Hercules) and a wave (representing the Atlantic Ocean) on the reverse side of the coin, and was meant to symbolize Spain's powerful navy and its expansion into the New World.
