Interesting fact
The Pattern 2 Lepta coin was designed by the French engraver and medalist, Jean-Baptiste Mercier, who was also responsible for designing the coin's obverse, which features a portrait of King George I. Mercier's design was chosen as the winning entry in a competition held by the Greek government to create a new coinage system for the country. The coin's reverse features an image of a seated Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, and was designed by another French artist, Auguste-Oscar Mettetal. The Pattern 2 Lepta coin was minted in 1869 as a trial strike, and only a limited number of coins were produced, making it a rare and valuable collector's item.
