Comment

Note: Prev. Pfalz-Simmern KM#91.
An imperial vicar was a prince charged with administering all or part of the Holy Roman Empire on behalf of the Emperor after his death until all of the Electors, or their representatives, could assemble for a new Imperial election. The vicariate came to be associated with two Counts Palatinate: the Duke and Elector of Saxony was vicar in areas operating under Saxon law (Saxony, Westphalia, Hanover, and northern Germany); the Count Palatine of the Rhine, also an Elector, was vicar in the remainder of the Empire (Franconia, Swabia, the Rhine, and southern Germany). At the death of Emperor Ferdinand III in 1657, there was a dispute between Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria and Karl Ludwig Elector Palatine for the Palatinate Imperial Vicariate. The Saxon vicar, Johann Georg II, recognized Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during a time of great turmoil in the Palatinate region. The Thirty Years War had recently ended, and the region was struggling to rebuild and recover. Despite these challenges, the minting of this coin shows that the Electors of the Palatinate were still committed to producing high-quality currency, which speaks to their resilience and determination.
