Konovalets was a colonel of the Ukrainian People's Republic Army, the first commander of the Ukrainian Military Organization, the head of the Ukrainian Nationalist Leading Body, and the head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists – a political movement that aimed to create an independent Ukrainian state in all ethnic Ukrainian lands.
