Comment

The coin commemorates the 140th anniversary of the birth of Nicholas Roerich (Nikolai Konstantinovich Rerikh), a world-famous artist, philosopher, scholar, archaeologist, explorer, who made a substantial contribution to the treasure house of the world science and culture having elaborated the first international Treaty on the Protection of Artistic and Scientific Institutions and Historic Monuments known as the Roerich Pact. Nicholas Roerich was connected with Ukraine by various intercommunications - from his delight in Taras Shevchenko's creative work up to the monumental mosaic compositions spiritualizing the orthodox churches.

Interesting fact

The coin features a portrait of Mykola Rerikh, a Ukrainian poet, writer, and public figure, on its obverse side. The reverse side of the coin depicts a stylized image of a candle and a branch, which symbolize light and life, two themes that were important in Rerikh's works.
