The coin is dedicated to Leo D.Landau (1908 – 1968), an outstanding physicist-theorist, the Nobel Prize laureate (1962), who made significant contribution to almost all fields of theoretical physics. He was the author of the classic work on diamagnetism of free electrons, theory of liquid helium superfluidity and many others. In the city of Kharkiv Leo D.Landau lead a theoretical department of the Ukrainian institute for Physics and Engineering, at the same time he headed chairs of theoretical physics in the Kharkiv Institute for Engineering and Mechanics and in the Kharkiv university, having established an advanced school of the Soviet theoretical physics

The Leo Landau coin was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Lev Davidovich Landau, a prominent Soviet physicist who made significant contributions to the field of theoretical physics, including the theory of superconductivity and superfluidity. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1962 and is considered one of the most important scientists of the 20th century.
