Comment

Rare off-metal strike in gold of the silver 2 gulden (2 florin) made in Antwerp (see link). De Witte (Vol. 3, p.63) mentions 3 known examples dated 1600 and 1601.

The example in the photos appears to be dated 1602, but this is inconsistent with the description of the type in van Gelder and Hoc. They have the monarchs uncrowned in 1600 - 1601, and the obverse legend starting at 9:00. For 1602 they say the monarchs are crowned and the legend begins at 12:00.

Possibly the coin in the photos is 1602/1.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during a time of political turmoil in the Spanish Netherlands. The coin was issued by Albert and Isabella, who were the rulers of the Duchy of Brabant, a region that is now part of modern-day Belgium. However, during this time, the region was under Spanish rule, and the coinage was heavily influenced by Spanish designs and styles. Despite this, the coin still features the image of Albert and Isabella, indicating the importance of local rulers and their influence on the currency. This coin serves as a unique piece of history that showcases the blending of cultures and political powers during that time period.
