Comment
This particular issue was conceived in the late 1860s, at which time various countries were trying to come up with a gold coin to compete with the French 5 Francs. Under William Wyon, Great Britain designed this lovely, gold "Double-Florin" which stated its intention to circulate internationally on the reverse. Unfortunately, it never got further than a number of Pattern coins.Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Pattern 2 Florins - Victoria ('Double-Florin'; Pattern) 1868 from United Kingdom is that it was designed by the famous artist and designer, William Wyon. Wyon was a renowned engraver and designer who worked for the Royal Mint and was responsible for creating many notable coins and medals during his career. His design for the Pattern 2 Florins - Victoria coin features a portrait of Queen Victoria on one side and a depiction of the crowned shield of the United Kingdom on the other. The coin was never released into circulation and only a small number of pattern coins were struck, making it a highly sought-after collector's item among numismatists.
