Comment
With the aim of showcasing elements of the traditional culture that make up our identity, the INCM, in partnership with the National Museum of Ethnology, has created the series of collection coins entitled "Portuguese Ethnography".The second coin of this series, designed by sculptor Baiba Sime, features the "Jugos", also known as "Cangas", profusely ornate wooden yokes from the Northwest of Portugal, that were attached to the teams of oxen used in farming.
Interesting fact
The 2014 Portuguese 2½ Euros Gold Coin (The Yokes; Gold) has a unique design that features a pair of oxen (yokes) pulling a plow, which symbolizes hard work, dedication, and tradition. The coin's design was inspired by a famous painting by the Portuguese artist, José Malhoa, who was known for his depictions of rural life in Portugal. The coin's design is not only visually striking, but it also serves as a reminder of Portugal's rich agricultural history and heritage.
