In order to highlight some elements of traditional culture that make up our identity, the INCM, in collaboration with the National Museum of Ethnology, created a series of collectible coins entitled «Portuguese Ethnography». The fourth coin in this series, created by the sculptor Baiba Šime, is alluding to the « Figurado de Barcelos », original figures in baked and painted clay that are born from the brilliant creativity of master craftsmen, who explore religious and festive themes, life daily life, the bestiary (devils and misshapen figures) or popular legends and narratives, where the famous Rooster of Barcelos stands out.Interesting fact
The Figurado de Barcelos coin is part of a series of commemorative coins issued by the Portuguese Mint to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. The coin features a unique design that depicts a rooster, which is a symbol of Barcelos, a city in northern Portugal where the saint is said to have performed a miracle. The rooster is surrounded by intricate details and patterns, making the coin a beautiful and collectible piece.
