Comment
Spain started the commemorative coin series “Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO” (UNESCO World Heritage) in 2010, commemorating all of Spain's UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which could continue until 2050. The order in which the coin for a specific site is issued coincides with the order in which they were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The "Santa Iglesia Catedral Basilica Metropolitana de Santa María" is a cathedral temple of Catholic worship dedicated to the Virgin Mary, in the Spanish city of Burgos. Its construction began in 1222, following French Gothic patterns. It had very important modifications in the 15th and 16th centuries: the spiers of the main façade, the Constable's chapel and the transept dome, elements of Flamboyant Gothic that give the temple its unmistakable profile. The last important works (the sacristy or the chapel of Santa Tecla) already belong to the 18th century, a century in which the Gothic façades on the main façade were also modified. The subsequent construction and remodeling were done with limestone extracted from quarries in the nearby town of Hontoria de la Cantera.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Burgos Cathedral 2 Euro coin is that it features a unique design that showcases the Gothic architecture of the cathedral, which was built in the 13th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The coin's bimetallic composition, with a nickel brass clad nickel center in a copper-nickel ring, adds to its distinctiveness and collectibility.
