Jean Paul Riopelle (1923-2002), one of the most globally admired Canadian artists of the 20ᵉ century, used his art to push boundaries and capture the attention of critics and art lovers the world over. One of his masterpieces, L'Hommage à Rosa Luxemburg, is featured on the $2 commemorative circulation coin marking his 100ᵉ birthday (1923-2023).While abstract mosaics made his name, Jean Paul Riopelle was interested in a variety of techniques throughout his career. Hommage à Rosa Luxemburg features aerosol silhouettes - including the emblematic birds seen on this coin - that form symbolic representations of the life he shared with his former companion.
Canada initially minted 2023 coins with a transitional effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, while a new effigy of Charles III is being prepared (or if a new law is passed).
