Comment
The Three Crosses are a Vilnius monument, located at the top of the Three Crosses mountain, on the right bank of the Vilnia river.Three wooden crosses were erected here in 1636 to commemorate the deaths of seven Franciscans in the 14th century at the hands of Vilnius inhabitants who had remained pagans, and to honor the right of Magdeburg to which the city had submitted. They collapsed in 1869, but the Imperial Russian government did not allow new ones to be built.
It was in 1916, when the city was occupied by the German army, that Antoni Wiwulski (the architect who designed Vilnius' Church of Providence) erected three concrete ones. They were demolished by the Soviet Lithuanian authorities in 1950.
They were restored by Stanislav Kuzma, after a signature campaign, and consecrated on June 14, 1989, before the country's independence, to commemorate the victims of Stalinism and the deportations of 1941. (Source : www.wikipedia.org)
