One side of Lawrence's headdress represents a map of the Middle East where he spent so much of his life.
The folds in the cloth of the other side represent the endless rolling sand dunes of the desert which Lawrence called home and the fluidity of his own life.
A Sopwith Camel biplane is set against this Arabian background, symbolizing Lawrence’s great love of flying and the many years he served in the RAF.
The fragmented, grid like element of this design, symbolizes the complex, secretive and multi sided nature of Lawrence’s life.

Interesting fact
The coin features a portrait of Thomas Edward Lawrence, also known as Lawrence of Arabia, on the obverse (front side), which is unusual for a coin featuring Queen Elizabeth II. This is because Lawrence of Arabia was a famous British archaeologist, army officer, and diplomat who played a significant role in the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during World War I. The coin was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lawrence's birth.
