Comment
Oslo Numismatic Society was founded in 1972 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022. Over the years, the society has issued a number of medals, but for the 50th anniversary, it was decided to mint a coin. The coin was to celebrate both the society's city - Oslo - and the connections between Oslo and Kyiv 1000 years ago. This connection is depicted on the coin with two rare coins and the inscription Ellisiv and Harald. Ellisiv was the daughter of Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise (1019-1054) and Ingegerd Olofsdotter (1001-1050) of Kyiv-Rus, and she married the Norwegian king Harald Hardrada (1045-1066). Ellisiv was the first foreign-born Norwegian queen. She is also known as Jelisaveta Yaroslavna (1020-1067). The coin was in part inspired by a ukranian issue commemorating Jelisaveta. The reverse side of the coin is minted using the incuse technique and shows a drawing of Oslo as the city looked during the Swedish siege in 1567. The drawing is based on a relief on the sarcophagus of King Frederick II (1534-1588) which is located in Roskilde Cathedral. The coin was minted at the Norwegian Mint in Kongsberg, Norway, on December 21, 2022. 300 copies were made, all numbered on the edge.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique reverse design, showcasing a stylized image of Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by a pattern of fern leaves, which is a nod to Niue's lush vegetation and natural beauty.
