AboutSixth issue of the Animal Portrait Series.
The moose is a symbol of Canada, and is featured on Ontario’s provincial coat of arms. Moose inhabit a wide range of habitats across Canada, and are found in every province and territory except Prince Edward Island.
This "gentle giant" is the largest member of the deer family, and is known for its easy-going nature as well as its determination.
The moose is a solid swimmer that has been known to swim a distance of 19 kilometres and dive more than 5.5 metres to reach plants at the bottom of a lake. Water also helps it cool down in the summer, when the moose is vulnerable to heat and biting insects.
This mighty creature is a vegetarian. It eats up to 23 kilograms of vegetation daily–half of its diet comes from flowering plants and tree shoots, while the other half consists of aquatic plants. Males (or bulls) weigh an average of 600 kilograms, but some have also been known to weigh as much as 1,500 kilograms. The moose sheds and re-grows its antlers annually. They can span up to 1.5 metres, which adds to the its already imposing size. Their bone growth rate is believed to be among the fastest of any animal in the world!
