Comment

This is an unusual triangular shaped $2 coin that has a depiction of a "Kumete" which has been traditionally used to pound root foods such as arrowroot. This particular "Kumete" is a traditional one from the island of Atiu and is illustrated in Sir Peter Bucks great work on Polynesian artifacts.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was designed specifically for the Cook Islands. The portrait was created by sculptor Raphael Maklouf and shows the Queen wearing a tiara and a necklace that is adorned with a large pearl. This portrait was used on all Cook Islands coins from 1987 to 1994 and has become a distinctive feature of the country's currency.
