Abd el-Kader ben Muhieddine (Arabic: عبد القادر بن محي الدين), better known as Emir Abdelkader, born 1808 in El Guetna (near Mascara), Algeria, and died May 26, 1883 in Damascus, Syria, was an Algerian politician and military leader, also a writer and poet, philosopher and theologian, Sufi, humanist and exegete.
Best known for resisting the French conquest of Algeria from 1832 to 1847, he is regarded in Algeria as a symbol of the struggle against colonialism and French domination, and as the originator of the modern Algerian state. (Source : www.wikipedia.org)
