Minted on Max Planck planchetInteresting fact
One interesting fact about the Pattern 2 Deutsche Mark (Pattern) 1951 from Federal Republic of Germany made of Copper-nickel weighing 6.88 g is that it was designed by the German artist and sculptor, Reinhart Heinsdorff. Heinsdorff's design features a portrait of the German poet and philosopher, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, on the obverse (front side) of the coin, and a stylized image of the German eagle on the reverse (back side). This design was chosen as the winning entry in a competition held by the German government in 1950 to create a new design for the Deutsche Mark coin, which was introduced in 1948 as a replacement for the Reichsmark. The Pattern 2 coin was minted in 1951 as a trial or pattern coin, but it was never officially released into circulation. Instead, it was kept as a collector's item and is now considered a rare and valuable coin among numismatists.
