Comment
Christopher Ironside, who taught life drawing at the Royal College of Art and had designed a few medals in the past for the Royal Mint, was the artist responsible for the reverse designs on the the first decimal coins that entered circulation in the UK from 1968, but the process of producing the coin designs started many years before that. The designs for these 1963 dated uniface patterns were produced by Ironside on behalf of the Royal College of Art and the Royal Designers for Industry in response to a request from the Royal Mint to submit designs for a new decimal currency. One interesting fact about the Pattern 2 Decimal Pence (Uniface Pattern) 1963 from United Kingdom is that it was designed by Christopher Ironside, a renowned British sculptor and coin designer, who also created the reverses of many other coins for the Royal Mint, including the decimalization series of coins introduced in 1971.
