Comment
The 1961 coins can be classed as being the last coins of the Union of South Africa as well as the first coins of the Republic of South Africa (as the Rand & Cent currency) was introduced on 14 February 1961.100 Cents = 1 Rand.
10 Shillings = 1 Rand.
1 Pound = 2 Rand.
Both the 3 Pence & the 2-1/2 Cents have the same nickname in South African English - Tickey.
Interesting fact
The 2½ Cents coin from South Africa's 1st decimal series (1961-1964) was the first coin to feature the image of a Black person on a South African coin. The coin bears the image of a woman from the Zulu ethnic group, symbolizing the diversity of the South African population. This was a significant departure from the previous coinage that primarily featured images of white figures.
