The law of January 9, 1852, ordered the issue of this coin and those of the and and provided at the same time the withdrawal of all foreign coins from January 1, 1853. The minting of these coins having been delayed, this date was postponed, and the Grand-Ducal decree of March 1st, 1854, definitively ordered the issue of the first coins for the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.This coin was struck at the mint of Brussels, it nevertheless includes the mark of the mint of Utrecht (caduceus) and that of its director (Roman sword). Several variants have been identified.
The piece of 1854 is thus sometimes without the accent on the E of 'Duché', which is less common than that with the accent.
