Faustin Soulouque (1782/1867) was a general when he was elected president of the republic in 1847. He purged the army and was proclaimed emperor under the name of Faustin I. After several unsuccessful attempts to seize the western part of the island (Saint Domingue), he was deposed in 1859.Interesting fact
The 2 Centimes 1850 coin from Haiti is notable for its unique design, which features a portrait of Haiti's first emperor, Faustin Soulouque, on the obverse side, and a depiction of a palm tree and the coat of arms of Haiti on the reverse side. This design was created by the French engraver, Jean-Baptiste Mercier, and it is considered to be one of the most iconic and recognizable coin designs in Haitian numismatics.
