Comment
Hartill says Sima Guang designed some coins of Zhezong, but does not specify which era he designed coins for. Because Sima Guang died in 1086, he could of only designed coins for the Yuanyou era.2 Cash pieces were re-introduced in 1093, but after only two years of circulating, it was found that these pieces gave no satisfaction, and they were discontinued in favour of the 1 Cash pieces.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique blend of Chinese and Tangut influences in its design. The use of Seal script, also known as Tongbao, was a writing system used during the Tangut Empire, while the coin's design and weight conform to the standard circulation coins used during the Northern Song dynasty of China. This blend of cultural influences reflects the complex history and cultural exchange that occurred during this time period in Chinese history.
