On one side, the coin features a portrait of King Radama I, who ruled Madagascar from 1810 to 1828 and is considered a national hero. On the other side, the coin features an image of a Malagasy woman weaving a traditional basket, which is a common motif in Malagasy art and symbolizes the country's rich cultural traditions. This design was created by the Malagasy artist, Andry Andriantsitoha, and it was chosen as the winner of a national competition held by the Central Bank of Madagascar in 2003.
