Representation of the Vučedol dove, a ceramic bowl from the ancient Vučedol culture, in the shape of a bird. Below the image of the dove, along the lower edge, is the coat of arms of the Republic of Croatia. The text "REPUBLIC OF CROATIA" is written in a circle along the edge, from left to right, bordering the image of the Vučedol dove. In the upper half-circle, on the right side, there is a numerical designation of the nominal value "500", below which is the inscription of the name of the monetary unit "KUNA".

Comment

The National Bank of Croatia issued commemorative gold and silver coins in permanent memory of the city of Vukovar and its defenders, a symbol of Croatia's struggle to defend freedom in the Croatian War of Independence.

The Vučedol culture flourished between 3000 and 2200 BCE (the Eneolithic period of earliest copper-smithing), centered in Syrmia and eastern Slavonia on the right bank of the Danube river, but possibly spreading throughout the Pannonian plain and western Balkans and southward. It was thus contemporary with the Sumer period in Mesopotamia, the Early Dynastic period in Egypt and the earliest settlements of Troy (Troy I and II).
