After a 12-year cycle of issuing its first series of silver coins featuring Chinese signs, the Mint is returning to this popular theme with a classic series featuring superb designs struck in 18-carat gold. You'll be proud to show off your splendid collection in this beautiful Oriental-inspired case, with its hardwood exterior covered in silkscreened paper and a high-gloss finish. The 12 pieces are encased in a wooden compartment painted in Chinese vermilion with a glossy finish and adorned with a silver motif.
In the West, the New Year is governed by the civil calendar and always falls on January 1st. The Chinese New Year, on the other hand, obeys the lunar calendar instituted by Emperor Huang Tia in 2637 B.C. to precisely locate the first day of spring, essential for agriculture. That's why it's also known as the Spring Festival.
The Festival is celebrated around 45 days after the winter solstice, on the first new moon following the harbingers of spring, midway between the winter solstice (December 21 or 22) and the spring equinox (March 20 or 21). The date thus calculated varies from year to year, and is February 3, 2011 for the Year of the Rabbit.
