For the year 2021, since the European Year of the Rail and the 80th Anniversary of Renfe are celebrated, the FNMT-RCM issues a collection of 20 coins dedicated to the History of the Railways. This series reproduces a selection of trains and locomotives that have been relevant throughout its history.LOCOMOTORA 1615: Once the fateful decade of the 1940s was over, Renfe decided to modernize its traction fleet with the introduction of diesel locomotives. This coincided with the signing in September 1953 of the Mutual Defense Agreement between the governments of Spain and the USA, thus making it possible for the North American company ALCO to give Renfe one of its diesel locomotives on a trial basis for six months.
On June 10, 1954, a unit of its DL-500 model arrived at the port of Santurce, that is, a single-cabin diesel locomotive with an elegant aerodynamic front end, C'C' running gear, a 1,620 CV diesel engine and a electrical transmission. Its exploitation fell to the Diesel Traction Service, which used it to tow trains between Baeza and Santa Cruz de Mudela.
During the testing period, Renfe published an international tender to acquire fourteen line diesel-electric locomotives. Of the eleven offers he received, he chose the DL-500 model. This series was supplied by ALCO and registered with 1601-1614, with 1615 being attributed to the prototype.
This pioneer locomotive, which earned the nickname "Marilyn", unlike the rest of the series, had a single driver's cab and a vacuum pump driven by an independent electric motor. Its electrical transmission implied that, through an electric generator coupled to the crankshaft, the energy was taken to the six electric motors that were located on the respective shafts.
On January 25, 1978, it left Renfe and became part of the collection of the Madrid Railway Museum, where it is exhibited in its original colors of silver and green stripes.
Interesting fact
The Locomotive 1615 coin features a unique design that showcases a steam locomotive, which is a rare and interesting feature for a coin.
