Comment

The P-3 Orion is a maritime surveillance and anti-submarine aircraft. It is also intended for anti-surface warfare and has been used, or continues to be used, by military institutions on the five continents.
Since 1973, when the first unit was accepted, the Air Force has acquired twelve units: seven in the P-3A version (the first three purchased and the rest received on loan from the United States Navy and later returned to it) and five in the P-3B version, purchased from the Norwegian Air Force in 1988 and received in that year and in 1989.
They have always been stationed in a maritime surveillance unit: first in Wing 22 based in Jerez de la Frontera and later in Group 22 of Wing 11, deployed in Morón airbase.
Our P-3 (the name they have been given by the Air Force) have been a key part of numerous anti-piracy missions in which Spain has participated in recent years as well as of the active pinpointing of migrant boats. Their work has prevented many tragic drownings at sea.

Interesting fact

The Lockheed P-3 non-circulating coin from Spain features a unique design that showcases the aircraft's role in maritime surveillance and reconnaissance. The coin's reverse side features an image of the Lockheed P-3 Orion aircraft in flight, with the words "Lockheed P-3" written above it and "Orion" below. The obverse side features the coat of arms of Spain, surrounded by the inscription "Kingdom of Spain" in Spanish. This coin is a great collector's item for anyone interested in aviation or military history.
