The Aviocar has hitherto been the greatest commercial success of the Spanish aeronautics industry, specifically of Construcciones Aeronáuticas, S.A. (CASA), given that it has been exported to military institutions and civil companies on the five continents. Around 500 units have been manufactured, and it continues to be produced under licence in Indonesia. CASA projects office embarked on its design in the early 1960s and the first prototype flew for the first time from Getafe on 26 March 1971.The idea that gave rise to its inception was to build an aircraft to replace the veteran CASA C-352L and Douglas C-47 in the Air Force. The Air Force Ministry and CASA signed a contract on 29 August 1968, converted to public deed on 10 October.
The Spanish Air Force has employed versions for cargo and troop transport (T.12B), for air navigation training (TE.12B), for aerial photography (TR.12A), for transporting authorities (T.12C), for electronic countermeasures (TM.12D) and for search and rescue and maritime surveillance missions (D.3B). It has served on as Transport Wings 35 and 37, on Mixed Wing 46, in the Air Force Academy, in the Military Air Transport and Transit School, in Squadrons 801 and 803 of the Air Rescue Service, in the Cartography and Photography Centre (403 Squadron), in the Military Parachuting School (721 Squadron), in Wing 47 and in the Armament and Experimentation Logistics Centre, CLAEX (541 Squadron). The last three units mentioned continue to have it in use.
