Comment
This is the only amphibious aircraft in the western world to have been designed for combating forest fires. In undertaking this mission it can hold 5,346 litres of water in two internal tanks situated on either side of the fuselage as well as 600 litres of fire retardant in a further two tanks. The water is drawn through two retractable scoops situated on the underside of the fuselage, immediately behind the keel.Thirty units have been serving the Air Force (404 Squadron and 43 Group) since February 1971. Of these, 13 (denominated CL-215T) were fitted with turboprop engines (Pratt&Whitney PW123AF, 2,380 hp maximum power and four-bladed carbon fibre propellers) –replacing the R-2800s and metallic three-blades– by Canadair itself and by Aeronáutica Industrial, S.A. (AISA), and two emerged as such from the factory between 1990 and 1993.
In addition, Spain acquired four more aircraft between 2006 and 2013, this time in the improved CL-415 version, which remain operational, together with the CL-215T, in the ranks of 43 Group of the Air Force.
Within the Air Force the CL-215 and CL-215T are denominated UD.13 and the CL-415 UD.14.
Interesting fact
The Canadair CL-215 coin, minted in 2020, features a unique design that showcases the reverse side of the coin, which depicts a stunning image of a firefighter in action, set against a backdrop of flames and smoke. This design was created to commemorate the brave efforts of firefighters who risk their lives to protect others. Additionally, the coin's obverse side features the effigy of King Felipe VI of Spain, adding a touch of regality to the coin's design.
