Comment
Symbolism is an integral part of Chinese culture, both written and spoken. While most contemporary characters are visual symbols of what they represent, the playful use of phonetic signs and puns lends a deeper visual and meaningful dimension to each message. Such is the case with this intricately-patterned coin, which conveys a wish for prosperity to its owner.Traditional Chinese beliefs hold that prosperity, like luck and longevity, is one of life's great blessings and an essential element of an ideal life. The motif skilfully combines detailed visual symbols and popular wordplay to express a wish for abundance.
The fish has long embodied abundance or surplus due to the phonetic proximity of the characters making up these words in Chinese. As a prolific generator of eggs, the carp is an auspicious symbol, not least because its pronunciation in Chinese is close to the words "profit" and "power". In the motif on the reverse of the coin, the magnificent carp, three in number (a lucky number), leap out of the rippling water (a symbol of perpetual abundance) that makes up the repeating pattern framing the reverse of the coin. This ingenious and intricate motif, the work of Canadian artist Albert Ng, expresses the notion of successive gains, and also features a delicate maple leaf hologram that pays tribute to the Chinese-Canadian community.

It can also represent happiness in one's place of residence and work, a wonderful way to interpret Canada's emblem and flag on the 50th anniversary of the Maple Leaf.
