Comment

Set of three pieces, edition: 2601.

The youngest member of Canada's famed Group of Seven, Franklin Carmichael (1890-1945) helped define a new "Canadian" style of landscape art in the 1920s and 1930s, one that reflected a deep love for the natural beauty of the rustic Canadian landscape. On the occasion of Franklin Carmichael's 125th birthday, the Royal Canadian Mint pays tribute to this highly respected artist with a remarkable set of coins faithfully reproducing details from his famous paintings.

Born on May 4, 1890 in Orillia, Ontario, Franklin Carmichael showed an interest in art from an early age; as a teenager, he honed his artistic skills as a carriage decorator in his father's workshop. After graduating from the Ontario College of Art and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Mr. Carmichael enjoyed great success as an advertising artist. However, his name is forever associated with the Group of Seven, which sparked a national movement and artistic interest in Canada's wild landscapes.

Motifs
The motif on the reverse of each piece represents an engraved detail from one of the three famous works by Canadian artist Franklin Carmichael (1890-1945) chosen for this set. In a reproduction of Carmichael's oil on canvas The Upper Ottawa River, near Mattawa (c. 1924), a lone pine catches the eye, while the Ottawa River occupies much of the background. The engraved reproduction of the watercolor Cranberry Lake (c. 1934) (gift of Mary Mastin, Toronto, 1996) offers another breathtaking view: the rolling hills overlooking the tiny lakeside village illustrate the vastness of the landscape. In a meticulous reproduction of the painting Landscape by Mr. Carmichael (c. 1925), created using linocut, a fine art printmaking technique that involves carving a relief image into a sheet of linoleum, inking it and then pressing it onto paper, the dark trees in the foreground stand out against the lighter ones behind, adding multi-dimensional depth to this illustration of a mountainous landscape.

Did you know?
- The Group of Seven originally included the following artists: Franklin Carmichael, Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J.E.H. MacDonald and Frederick Varley.
- The Group of Seven later numbered 10 members: A.J. Casson, who regarded Mr. Carmichael as a mentor, joined in 1926; Edwin Holgate (Montreal) joined in 1929; and LeMoine FitzGerald (Winnipeg) joined in 1932.
- Mr. Carmichael painted in both watercolor and oil, which distinguishes his work from that of the other Group of Seven artists.
- He co-founded the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolor (CSPWC) in 1925, and in 1933 helped found the Canadian Group of Painters.
