Comment

Per CNG, as of 2013 year, only seven examples are known.

Amandry, Une monnaie de la cité Ionienne d'Airai, pp.11-12; SNG Copenhagen –; MG p. 280, 259; Imhoof-Blumer, Kleinasiatische Münzen 1901, Supplement p. 512, 1.

Airai was a tiny Greek city with harbour and it is only known from this coin. This city existed only for a very short time before being conquered by their neighbours from Teos in circa 370 BC and disappearing.

Interesting fact

The Airai (Ionia) Standard circulation coin Æ13, made of Bronze and weighing 1.80g, features a unique design on its obverse side. It depicts a lion's head, which was a common motif in ancient Greek coinage, symbolizing strength, courage, and royalty. The lion's head is shown in profile, with its mane rendered in intricate detail. This design element was a hallmark of ancient Greek coinage and speaks to the artistic skill and craftsmanship of the time.
