Interesting fact

The 12 Mariengroschen coin was minted during the reign of George Louis, who was the Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover from 1700 to 1711. The coin was made of silver and was a standard circulation coin during that time. One interesting fact about this coin is that it features an image of St. Mary, the patron saint of Hanover, on the obverse side, which is why it's called the "Mariengroschen" (meaning "Marian groat" in German). The coin's design was inspired by the Mariengroschen coins that were minted in the 14th century in the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, which were also dedicated to St. Mary.
