Lake Balkhash is one of the largest lakes in Kazakhstan and the 15th largest in the world. It is the only natural reservoir in the world and consists of two parts at once: salt and fresh.

Balkhash perch is one of the endemic fish living in the lake. It separated from its closest relative, the common river perch, about 5-7 million years ago. It is included in the Red Book of Kazakhstan.

When developing the design concept, the specialists of the National Bank decided to use new technologies in the BALQASH ALABUǴASY coin. The Kazakh Mint has tested innovative minting using 3D ultra-high relief technology.

According to the test results, a prototype was obtained with a perch head relief 17 mm higher than the plane of the coin. No mint in the world can achieve such a result yet.

For the artistic completeness of the composition of the coin, the NBK designers changed the vertical inclination of the fish axis to 10 degrees, added details in ultra-high relief and made the mirror surface of the background wavy with an iridescent image of the scales of the Balkhash perch.

The task for the Kazakhstan Mint became more complicated, since the original instrument assumed division along one plane, which was prevented by the applied waves. To solve this problem, the specialists of the Mint developed a unique die-washer, which allowed to mint a wavy surface with a rainbow image and did not prevent the separation of the finished product from the embossing tool.
