Comment
The coins of this series have been produced by the “Lisbon Mint House” in the Summer of 1755 and stored at the "India House" in October. They were ready to follow to Mozambique when, at the 01NOV1755, a terrible earthquake followed of a fire and a sunami destroyed the city of Lisbon.
The “India House”, next to the port, was also destroyed. Partially, they have been partially saved and sent to Mozambique.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the 1000 Réis - José I (Lisbon) 1755 coin from Mozambique is that it was minted during the reign of King José I of Portugal, who ruled from 1750 to 1777. This coin was part of a series of coins minted during his reign to promote trade and commerce in the Portuguese colonies, particularly in Africa and Asia. The coin's design features the king's portrait on one side and the coat of arms of Portugal on the other, symbolizing the country's influence and power in the region. Despite being made of gold, the coin was still used for everyday transactions, reflecting the high value placed on gold during that time period. Today, this coin is a rare and valuable collector's item, providing a glimpse into the rich history of Mozambique and the Portuguese colonial era.
