Johan V. Snellman was born in Stockholm in 1806, and moved at an early age to Finland, then part of the Russian Empire.A philosopher, journalist and politician, he favored monetary independence and the recognition of Finnish as an official language. He died in 1881.
A Finnish Heritage Day, or Snellman Day, is dedicated to him on May 12.
