Considered one of the most beautiful active lighthouses in the world, the Lindau Lighthouse stands at 108 feet tall on Lake Constance at the entrance to the harbour of Lindau. Built between 1853 and 1856, it is Germany’s southernmost lighthouse and replaced an older light tower constructed in 1230. The new lighthouse was first lit on October 4, 1856, by an open oil fire, and over time, converted to kerosene and then gas. In 1936, it began operating electrically and became fully automated in the early 1990s. Today, the lighthouse is lit on demand by approaching ships using radio signals.Interesting fact
