Interesting fact

The Pattern 1000 Escudos coin features a unique design that was created by the Portuguese artist, Gomes Eanes de Zurara. The design depicts a portrait of the explorer, Vasco da Gama, on the obverse side, and a map of the world on the reverse side, with the dates of da Gama's voyages inscribed along the edges. This design was chosen as a way to commemorate the 500th anniversary of da Gama's historic voyage to India in 1498.
