Julius Nyerere: Tanzanian politician, founding father of Tanzania, President of Tanzania from the date of the country's foundation, in 1964, until his retirement, in 1985. He is considered one of the greatest historical figures of the Twentieth Century and one of the two most important personalities of modern Africa together with Nelson Mandela.

The 100 Shilingi coin was introduced in 1993 and was in circulation until 2015. It was made of brass plated steel and weighed 9 grams. The coin features the portrait of Julius Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania, on the obverse, and the Tanzanian coat of arms on the reverse.
