The sable, an extremely quick animal with exquisite fur, lives in coniferous forests from the north of the Ural mountains to the Pacific ocean. Russians have hunted the sable, highly valued for its fur, since olden times and the animal is represented in the coat of arms of the old Russian cities of Irkutsk, Yakutsk and Verkhoturye.

Interesting fact

The 1994 Russian 100 Roubles (Sable) gold coin features a unique design, with a sable (a small mammal native to Russia) on the obverse, and the Russian coat of arms on the reverse. This coin was minted to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the victory in World War II, and its design was meant to symbolize the strength and resilience of the Russian people during that time.
