Date of issue: 02 MAR 2009The Republic of Kalmykiya is located in the western part of the Near-Caspian Lowland. In south-east it is surrounded be the Caspian Sea. Extraction of natural gas and petroleum as well as fine-fleeced sheep-breeding and meat cattle-breeding are developed in Kalmykiya.

The 100 Roubles (Kalmykia) 2009 coin from Russia features a unique design that reflects the cultural heritage of the Kalmyk people, a Mongolian ethnic group that has lived in the region for centuries. The coin's obverse side depicts a traditional Kalmykian woman's headdress, while the reverse side features a stylized image of a horse, which is an important symbol in Kalmykian culture. The coin's design was created by the Russian artist, A. V. Bakhrushin, and it was issued to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Kalmyk people's arrival in Russia.
