The Town of Alexandrov (in the XIVth century was known as "Alexandrovskaya Sloboda" - means large village) in 1564-1581 was the centre of Oprichnina (special repressive system of Ivan the Terrible). That time his residence was located there. Now days the architectural monuments of Alexandrov are part of the national museum "Alexandovskaya Sloboda".
