Interesting fact

The 100 Réis coin from Brazil, minted between 1889 and 1900, has an interesting feature. Despite being made of copper-nickel, a non-ferrous alloy, it was designed with a distinctive square hole in the center, which was intended to prevent the coin from being strung together with other coins using a piece of twine or cord. This unique design feature was implemented to discourage the practice of "sifting" coins, which was a common method used by traders and merchants to quickly count and sort coins by their denomination.
