NOTE: This coin is a Piedfort for KM# 320, means to be a coin minted on a doubled thickness planchet, but using the dies of the regular issue. Therefore, the weight shown in the reverse does not match with the actual weight.Take of the Bastille, on July 14th, 1789. became a symbol of the success of the French Revolution, in spite of the medieval fortress, that formerly was used as state jail, at the moment of the taking only had 7 prisoners, and was defended by only 114 soldiers.
This was because the medieval fortress had too high maintenance costs, and was decided on the previous year to be demolished.
Only 1 of the defenders died at the event, and nearly 100 in the attackers.
