Comment
The obverse motif of twelve interlaced rings symbolizes the twelve original members of the European Union. Alain Paoli's design is reminiscent of the Fugio Cent, the first coin issued by the fledgling U.S. federal state, on which thirteen interlaced rings represent the first thirteen colonies.
Interesting fact
The coin features an image of Jean Monnet, a prominent French political economist and diplomat who is widely regarded as the founder of the European Union. The coin was issued in 1992 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Monnet's birth.
